Latest company news about Do you know about the scientific design of supermarket shelves, including their layer, size, and combination logic?
Shelves are the core carrier for supermarkets to achieve efficient space utilization and accurate commodity display. The planning of their layers, setting of sizes, and configuration of combination quantities are directly related to the improvement of supermarket operational efficiency and the optimization of consumers' shopping experience.
The design of shelf layers needs to balance practicality and accessibility, with 3-5 layers being the optimal configuration for conventional retail shelves. The height of the bottom layer from the ground is controlled at 0.1-0.2 meters, suitable for placing shopping baskets, stock replenishment goods, or low-frequency consumer goods. The "golden display layer" at 1.2-1.5 meters, which conforms to the natural reach height of most customers (especially adults), is ideal for highlighting core categories such as high-turnover daily necessities and best-selling snacks. The top layer can be used to store seasonal goods, promotional reserves, or large-sized packaged goods. Shelves for special categories require differentiated design: shelves in the home appliance area can be increased to 6 layers to meet the display needs of large items, while shelves in the fresh food area need to have fewer layers (usually 2-3 layers) to reduce the impact of stacking on the freshness of goods.
The size design of shelves must adapt to both the supermarket's spatial layout and the physical characteristics of goods. The overall height of conventional shelves is usually controlled at 1.6-2.2 meters, while the height of tall shelves (such as warehouse-style shelves) in large comprehensive supermarkets can be increased to more than 2.4 meters. The width of shelves follows the industry standard of 0.9-1.2 meters; for areas with small-sized commodities like snacks and stationery, narrow shelves of 0.6-0.8 meters can be used to further improve the display density per unit area. The distance between layers is adjustable, usually set at 30-50 centimeters according to the height of commodities, which not only ensures the display quantity of each layer but also prevents inconvenience in taking goods caused by excessively small spacing.
The number of shelf combinations should be scientifically configured based on the overall layout planning of the supermarket. In the main aisle area of large supermarkets, a double-row parallel combination is often adopted, with each row connecting 3-5 standard shelf units to ensure smooth passage. Corner areas can be equipped with corner shelves (such as L-shaped and curved corner shelves) to effectively fill spatial dead angles and improve overall utilization. The promotional area needs to enhance commodity exposure, so 4-6 shelf units are commonly combined into display piles. The height of these piles is controlled within 1.2 meters to avoid blocking the view of surrounding shelves and ensure clear transmission of promotional information. Through the scientific design of shelf combinations, supermarkets can maximize space utilization, increase the exposure rate of core commodities, and boost sales growth.
